The first fire lookout on the site was built in 1932 and rebuilt in the early 1960s, when an extra 20 feet was added to its tower. In the early 1970s the lookout was retired and the structure fell into disrepair. Like a ski lift, the road climbs fairly quickly (although not at the rate of a high-speed quad), with views of surrounding peaks opening up. Open ski slopes mean open meadows, which means midsummer wildflower mania. You know the saying: Take some time to stop and smell the Indian paintbrush. Views expand the higher you go, and Stevens Pass—where east meets west—shrinks smaller and smaller both in sight and sound. Because much of the trail is in the open, in midsummer it can be hot. Be sure to take plenty of water, especially if there are young ones along.

Throw in a line. Take a load off. You’ll want to stay a while. 8 miles farther and 1,500 feet higher. Along with the lake, you’ll find wildflower meadows and Alaska cedars more than three hundred years old.
