The first fire lookout on the site was built in 1932 and rebuilt in the early 1960s, when an extra 20 feet was added to its tower. In the early 1970s the lookout was retired and the structure fell into disrepair. Like a ski lift, the road climbs fairly quickly (although not at the rate of a high-speed quad), with views of surrounding peaks opening up.
